Protect Our Planet: Buy from Better Companies
During our last visit to China, we witnessed a very high level of air pollution in Beijing and Guangzhou. People wearing mask in the streets of Beijing is not extraordinary anymore. The pollution is not only from the exhaust of cars, but it also is from the factories that exist within and around industrial cities, such as Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai. Over the past 30 years, China has been growing at a substantial rate. This growth came with a price by unleashing people to open production factories without caring about the environment. According to some accounts, there are about 400 factories to produce only edgebanding. How can that amount of producers exist in one country for only edgebanding? The answer is simple: in the sake of growth and higher GDP, the government has allowed setting up a factory so simple, without the need to invest in infrastructure that would keep the environment clean, the air clean. The same idea applies to textile and other industries. When all these are added up, the result unfortunately is visible in Beijing with total air pollution. It is a fact that China helped the world’s growing population to have many things at very low cost; for example, we can buy toys, phones, computers, home accessories at a quarter of the price of 30 years ago. To do that, they sacrificed so much from the environment and probably from quality as it appears from the high level of pollution in Chinese industrial cities. But if they keep working in the same way, they will damage the humanity both inside their country and outside. The world must let China to produce better products in better factories. The world must stop pushing Chinese producers to produce cheap, cheap products. The purchasing responsible should not only buy products but also care about how that product is made, in what kind of factory it is made. This magnificent planet is not ours only; it also belongs to the future generations, it belongs to our children, our future grandchildren. Let’s help China by teaching those factories that producing cheap product is not enough anymore. They must care about our world also.
